The State Revenue Office (SRO) is investigating an error made by a private printing company, which resulted in an estimated 4400 overdue notices being sent to the wrong recipients last week.

The SRO was advised of the error late on Thursday. The printer has taken full responsibility for the error.

Commissioner of State Revenue Paul Broderick has demanded an explanation from the printer.

“The privacy of our taxpayers is critically important and we have strict policies in place to protect customer information,” Mr Broderick said.

“This error has occurred externally and we will thoroughly investigate the printer’s processes to ensure this does not happen again.”

The SRO has notified the Commissioner for Privacy and Data Protection and put a stop to any further notices being issued until a review is undertaken.

The SRO will write to all affected taxpayers via registered mail today.

Anyone with questions about the notices should contact the SRO directly on (03) 9628 6991.
