DescriptionThis video will guide you on the steps required to request a refund of overpaid duty.
To request a refund of overpaid duty, you can choose to go through a registered Duties Online user, or you can lodge the application yourself online. To do this, go to the SRO website, and select the Land Transfer Duty Hub, select "Show More".
Scroll further down until you see "Apply for a duty refund" reassessment. Select this box.
You will then be presented with detailed information about refunds. Scroll down to point 3, and select the "Register refund lodgement" button.
This will take you to a new screen, where you need to select "Start a new refund claim".
Enter your email address, then again for confirmation – then select the button.
You will be prompted to check your email for a reference ID. You can copy and paste this ID into the field by selecting Control C then Control V on your keyboard. This will prevent any possible mistakes when typing the reference number. Select "Verify & Next".
Here is where we enter the details of the lodger, including entity type, name and contact details.
The reference number is your own internal reference number, and the duty transaction ID is the number associated to the transaction you are seeking the refund for. This will be seven digits long.
You will then be prompted to select a refund lodgement category – if you’re not sure which category to select you can always go to the help text icon for more detailed explanations for each category type.
The refund will be paid to the transferee of the property. You will need to enter the BSB, account number and account name. You can also add comments if you wish.
The next step is to upload supporting documentation. Select the document type from the list, and then upload your documents one at a time. You can upload multiple documents, but they must be uploaded individually. Once you are finished and have uploaded all of your documents, select the "Submit" button.
You will be prompted to confirm that the bank account details are correct. Please check this information carefully.
A green bar will appear across the top of the screen confirming that the refund lodgement has been submitted to the SRO.
An email will also be sent to you confirming that the claim has been lodged.
Once the refund has been processed, the funds will be deposited into the nominated bank account.
