Do I need to lodge a Freedom of Information (FOI) request?

If you are considering lodging a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, please contact us first on +61 3 9628 6801 or by email at foi@sro.vic.gov.au.

You may be able to access documents without the complexities associated with an FOI request. For example, we publish a lot of information on this website, and information relating to your own affairs, such as material you have previously provided to the SRO, can sometimes be provided outside of FOI.

How do I lodge an FOI request?

Requesting access to documents under the Victorian Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the Act) must be in writing.

The easiest way to submit your request is by email, to foi@sro.vic.gov.au.

You can also submit a request via post:

FOI Requests
State Revenue Office Victoria
GPO Box 1641
Melbourne VIC 3001

You do not need to complete an application form, but make sure you clearly describe the documents you are requesting and include your contact details.

If you are making a request on behalf of another party, please include a signed authority from them to show us you have their permission to obtain the requested information.

When making a request, include proof of payment for the statutory application fee or evidence in support of waiving the fee, such as a valid Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card.

From 1 July 2024, the statutory application fee for lodging an FOI request is $32.70. Payment can be made by electronic funds transfer (EFT). Please contact our FOI team for payment details.

We aim to provide an access decision within 30 days of receiving a valid request, although some decisions may take longer. We will notify you if we are unable to provide a decision within 30 days.
