Commencement of administration of a deceased estate
Tell us when a deceased estate administration starts.
You must notify us when the administration of a deceased estate has started. You need to do this within one month of the date of appointment, otherwise penalties may apply.
The date of appointment is when the Supreme Court of Victoria, or another relevant authority, issues a grant of representation. This is via:
- grant of probate (as executor, where the deceased died with a valid will), or
- letters of administration (as administrator, where the deceased died without a valid will).
Step 1: Gather required information
To complete the Deceased estate - commencement or completion of administration form, you will need:
- personal details, including your address, date of birth and State Revenue Office customer number (if known). If there are more than one personal representatives, you will need details for each
- the deceased details, including residential address at their time of death, date of death and State Revenue Office customer number (if known).
If there are several personal representatives, only one needs to submit the form.
Step 2: Complete the form
Complete and lodge the form online.
We use the information provided to update our records and may pass on the changes to other government agencies where we are authorised to do so.
Step 3: Attach your supporting documents
You need to submit the following with your form:
- a copy of the grant of probate issued by the Supreme Court of Victoria or equivalent authority, including a copy of the annexed will and testamentary instruments (note the date of issue), or
- a complete copy of the letters of administration issued by the Supreme Court or equivalent authority (note the date of issue).
Step 4: Lodge your form
When you have provided all mandatory information, select submit to lodge your form.
