Land tax overpayment

Claim a refund following an overpayment letter.

Land tax overpayment letters

If you recently received a letter from us about overpaying land tax, please read this page to:

  • confirm whether you have made an overpayment
  • learn how to claim a refund.

Why overpayments happen

Often when people sell a property, land tax is paid as part of the settlement process.

Sometimes, landowners are not aware of the payments made at settlement. When they receive a land tax assessment, they make separate payments, causing an overpayment.

An overpayment can be the full amount or a portion depending on:

  • the calculations made at settlement
  • the payments made.

How to claim a refund

We can only pay a refund if you submit a refund claim form.

You will need to provide:

  • information about the person entitled to the refund
  • detail about the payments you have made
  • the refund amount.

If you don’t know all this information, lodge the form with as much information as possible. We will then contact you to work through any gaps to work out whether we can pay a refund.

The form also asks for bank account details where we can pay any refund. If you don’t want to give us these details, leave the fields blank and we will pay your refund by cheque. Make sure your mailing address is correct.
