HomeBuilder Grant
The HomeBuilder Grant was administered on behalf of the Australian Government and is now closed.
Key information
The HomeBuilder Grant is closed. It was an Australian Government program that helped stimulate residential construction after the COVID-19 pandemic. To be eligible, applicants had to enter into a contract to build, buy or substantially renovate a home between 4 June 2020 and 31 March 2021 and apply for the grant by 14 April 2021.
The key dates of the scheme were:
- contracts had to be signed between 4 June 2020 and 31 March 2021
- applications closed at midnight on 14 April 2021
- supporting documents closed at midnight on 30 June 2025
- incomplete applications were closed after 30 June 2025.
Construction did not need to start before 31 March 2021. However, it had to start within 18 months of the contract date and could not have started before 4 June 2020.
Grant amounts depended on when the contract was signed:
- $25,000 for contracts signed from 4 June 2020 to 31 December 2020.
- $15,000 for contracts signed from 1 January 2021 to 31 March 2021.
Residency requirement
The grant conditions included living in the home as your principal place of residence for a continuous period of at least 6 months, starting immediately after completion, renovation or settlement.
You must keep records that show you met this requirement. We may ask you to provide evidence later.
If you cannot meet the residency requirement, you must tell us within 14 days of becoming aware. You may need to repay the grant.
Audits and reviews
We audit applications to check that applicants met the eligibility and residency rules.
If we contact you during an audit, you must provide the information we ask for. You may need to repay the grant if you:
- do not provide the information we request
- gave false or misleading information
- were not eligible for the grant
- did not meet the residency requirement.
